Ghana’s active cases currently number about 500
Ms. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Chief of Staff, has called on Ghanaians to adhere to prescribed health protocols to prevent new infections from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
He stressed that although the nation had achieved successes in containing the viral disease, COVID-19 was not over yet and everyone should protect each other by wearing especially nasal masks in public.
The Chief of Staff reminded Ghanaians that washing their hands with soap and under running water and frequent use of hand sanitizers remains the safest remedy to stop new infections and the spread of the pandemic nationwide.
Ms Osei-Opare made the appeal when she inaugurated separate water projects built by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) under the Commission’s Pro-Poor water program for the chiefs and residents of Susuanso, Adrobaa and Koforidua in the Ahafo region. PURC began implementation of its flagship pro-poor water program in 2012 and aims to make safe drinking water accessible to poor and disadvantaged communities in the country.
Ms Osei-Opare said that the government’s free water supply was intended to ensure that Ghanaians have easy access to water so they have enough to wash their hands regularly and promote personal hygiene.
However, he added that the nation’s strenuous efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 will not be successful if the population does not adhere to prescribed health security protocols.
Ms. Osei-Opare emphasized the government’s commitment to achieving target six of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ensuring access to safe drinking water and good environmental sanitation by 2030.
As a critical national resource, the Chief of Staff indicated that access to safe, quality water was not only a basic necessity, but a necessity of life that should not be denied to all Ghanaians, and said that access to clean and shortages were still a problem. main factor contributing to poverty.
Therefore, he praised the PURC for its efforts to provide quality water to people in disadvantaged communities and asked the beneficiaries to take good care of the facilities.
Mami Dufie Ofori, Executive Secretary of the PURC, said that the Commission had invested over GhC3 million in its 2019/2020 pro-poor water projects across the country, which included; mechanized drilling with elevated 10,000 liter storage tanks on reinforced concrete platforms.
He expressed optimism that 49 water projects would guarantee not only easy access to potable water, but an efficient and regular water supply for beneficiary communities to meet the requirement of a reliable, sustainable and improved water supply.
The financing of the pro-poor water program, explained that it was in line with the PURC Act of 2010 (Law 800) as amended which provides the necessary legislative framework to fund the program.
Ms Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North indicated that it had built 75 wells, 18 classroom blocks and seven durbar plots in the constituency, and said several road projects were also under construction.
He said electricity had also spread to more than 32 disadvantaged communities in the area in the last three and a half years, and expressed the hope that people will vote to retain the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the elections of the December 7 to see marked improvement in their socioeconomic livelihoods.
Ms. Prempeh reminded the people of Susuanso as one of the strongholds of the New Patriotic Party (PNP) since 1992, the government would ensure that all their basic development needs were met.
