Education Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said that teachers are treated with respect and dignity under the New Patriotic Party government than under the 8-year administration of the opposition Democratic National Congress.

According to him, the situation that the PNP government came to inherit was bad, since the allocation for trainee teachers was canceled, the allocation for books and research for tertiary education teachers was canceled, teacher absenteeism was 27% , some students who made it to the sixth class were unable to write their names among other monumental challenges.

Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh said that the situation under his supervision has improved considerably. “We have restored the allowances for pre-service teachers, we still pay allowances for books and research for university teachers and we added teachers from the colleges of education, we brought the licensing exam, among other good policies we have introduced to help teachers.” .

He continued: “Recently, an international education body conducted a survey in 35 countries around the world, the survey ranked Ghana second after China as the country that treats teachers very well. This was not done in Ghana, but in an international body. The NPP government has done much for teachers under this administration than the previous government. ”

He stated that starting this Monday, November 2, 2020, the government was going to hire 6,500 graduate teachers.

He added that 8,000 graduate teachers have already been hired under the two-way policy. “In total, we have hired 93,000 teachers since we took over the reins of government.”

The Education Minister spoke with Kwami Sefa Kayi, also known as President General, on Peace FM’s morning show Kokrokoo on Friday, October 30, 2020.

It urges teachers whose back wages have not been paid should go through the process or even give their details to their union leaders to send to Accra for necessary actions.

Responding to why some teachers have been upgraded but not yet placed on the correct scale, he said, some of those teachers did an upgrade without permission from GES.

He went on to say that, others went to make updates that did not necessarily have to do with their teaching area, but that despite this, “These teachers are gradually being placed on their scale. Those who obtained permission to update usually have no problems. with their salary level location than those who did not get permission before the upgrade. ”

He explained that salary payments are made according to budget allocations, “So if people decide to do an update without permission, GES cannot just promote it, but must go through a process so that the government can pay.”

He concluded that the PNP government has done much for teachers and the education sector than any other government.
