Parliament approved the government’s request for GHS 27.4 billion for the first quarter of 2021.

The approval comes days after the Finance Minister submitted a pre-appropriation spending request.

Introducing the Finance Committee’s report on the application to the House, Committee Chair Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah provided details on how the government intends to use the money, as well as some economic indicators.

He noted that the total debt balance in August was 267.7 billion, which represents 69.7 percent of GDP.

Dr. Assibey Yeboah assured that the committee “has carefully examined the request,” since it supported the request for funds by the state.

The minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu, during the debate on the report, questioned the accuracy of the figures presented to parliament by the Finance Minister.

“What’s worrying is that if we don’t have the correct statistics on debt and GDP, we will not get the other correct figures; even inflation, we will not do well, “he warned.
