Government will review land acquisition: committee begins work next year

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured the Chamber of Chiefs of the Greater Accra Region that he will establish a committee to analyze in depth the issue of compulsory land acquisition by the government in the region.

The committee, which would be set up to begin work next year, would analyze the possibility of returning the lands to their allodial owners, he said.

President Akufo-Addo gave the assurances when he addressed the Accra Region Chiefs’ House in Dodowa yesterday as part of his working tour of the region.

He noted that the committee would make appropriate recommendations for a government decision and admitted that “a few weeks before the elections are held, the creation of this committee this year may not be feasible.”

First move

As a show of commitment to compromise, the president commissioned the Minister of Religious Affairs and Chiefs, Mr. Kofi Dzamesi, to initiate stakeholder engagements with the chamber on the composition of the committee and its terms of reference.

He assured the government house of support for the institution of chiefdom, so that it could be resilient.

He announced that six new office and bungalow complexes would be provided for the six new regional chiefs’ houses.

“Additionally, as I have said, we will endeavor to provide the institution with the necessary support to resolve chiefdom issues and carry out investigations in many relevant areas to stop conflicts related to chiefdom,” he emphasized.

Peace

President Akufo-Addo said the government will ensure that the peace and security the country enjoys is not disturbed before, during and after the December 7 elections.

He requested the collaboration of the chiefs to avoid the repetition of the deplorable events that recently occurred in Odododiodio.

Development projects

As part of the government’s Agenda 111, which seeks to build hospitals in districts that do not have them, the President told the house that over the next 12 months, the Greater Accra Region would have its share.

“There are 847 projects underway in the region, 423 completed and the remaining 424 ongoing,” he said.

He said that of the 423 completed projects, 87 were in the education sector, 17 in the health sector, 173 road projects, 74 water and sanitation projects, 25 in the industrial sector and 10 market projects.

Praise

The President of the House of Chiefs of the Accra Region, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, praised President Akufo-Addo for keeping the promises he made to the people of Ghana before the 2016 elections.

He said government policies had a positive impact on people’s lives, reduced corruption and led to the progress of the nation.
Nii Dowuona mentioned that some of the policies adhered to include One-district, One-factory (1D1F), Free SHS, One-village, One-dam, the digital address system, national ID cards, and the creation of six new regions. .

He commended the president for ensuring that this year’s Homowo celebrations were peaceful and without incident.

Supremacy

Nii Dowuona said that the house was made up of 13 supreme, and that any chief who was not part of the house was not considered a legitimate traditional ruler in the region.

He said the house had started the process of documenting all legitimate bosses and had also facilitated the adjudication of cases to reduce the number of litigation in the region.
