Whip of the head of the minority, Muntaka Mubarak.
The Asawase MP is calling on the Ghana Police Service to review the way his anti-theft unit works to prevent it from degenerating into a Nigerian replica.
Muntaka Mubarak said the unit is being used to intimidate the public for no reason warning that EndSARS in Nigeria’s reaction should warn the Service of similar repercussions.
He accused the police anti-theft unit of acting contrary to the Service’s professional code, citing the wrongful murder of seven people to back up his argument.
“We are seeing what is happening in Nigeria and other parts of the world. It started like this and when the citizens of correct thinking fell silent, it grew and became what we are seeing today ”.
He added: “The abuse is happening in their office, they beat up the suspects or when they arrest people and no one is watching they take them to a place and they shoot and kill them.
“I have summoned the seven from Zongo because it is an independent committee that says so and these people are still in the unit,” he told reporters in Kumasi one day after one of ten of his supporters stopped in front of his office for the Unit. .
The deputy said the matter has already been raised in parliament, waiting for the Interior Ministry to come before the House to answer questions regarding unity, but accepts that it might not be possible immediately due to time constraints.
Although the anti-theft unit is tasked with dealing with theft incidents, the MP said their appearance rather represents that of thieves, not policemen.
“They are dressed elegantly, some of them with hideous curls or unkempt hair. If they were not carrying firearms and in police vehicles, he will call them diverted. Let the police tell us where they got the idea of policing? “he added.
The statement comes after 10 men were arrested on Saturday by the burglar unit in front of the Asawase MP’s office.
Nine of them were released on bail on Sunday after sympathizers besieged the police headquarters.
But one of them, Awudu Sulemana, popularly called Scorpion, remained in police custody accused of robbery.
Muntaka Mubarak claims that the suspect has been a PNP activist who recently defected to the NDC and is being held for political reasons.
“This man is very responsible, but after he defected from the PNP, they have always persecuted him,” he said.
Mubarak believes that the arrest, among others, is a clear attempt by the government machinery to harass voters using the police.
He wants the youth of Asawase and all of the Zongo communities to exercise restraint while the matter goes through the courts.
