Jamie Carragher has joked that he has to avoid Jurgen Klopp at Anfield following his comments on Liverpool’s decision not to reinforce the defense in the summer.
Klopp was particularly offended by Carragher’s suggestion last week, following Virgil van Dijk’s severe ACL injury, that Liverpool should have anticipated potential problems earlier.
The former Liverpool defender also said the club should do everything possible to bring in Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig when the transfer window reopens on January 1.
Klopp, who is also now without Fabinho after the backup center-back was injured in a 2-0 Champions League win over Midtjylland, responded last week by saying: ‘It’s tough to have four world-class center halves.
If someone wants to tell us we made a mistake, I think Carragher already mentioned it. There are a few reasons why they don’t do this job. ‘
Following Tuesday night’s win at Anfield, Carragher was asked if he had reconciled with Klopp.
He told CBS Sports: ‘Well it’s right on my right shoulder [as Carragher is stood on the sidelines of the Anfield pitch].
‘I’m just being careful. He’s 6ft 5, right? Have you seen the size of him? Why do you think I’m in the Kop?
With Fabinho out injured, Klopp has only one fully fit central defender in Joe Gomez and is expected to line up alongside young Rhys Williams with some doubts about Joel Matip’s physical condition.
Carragher was jokingly asked if Klopp could call him, to which the former defender brazenly replied, ‘Well, by the way it looks, I mean it could be half a chance.
“Right now, there is no one on TV talking about a better game than me.”
