Diogo Jota has already written his name in Liverpool’s history books after scoring the club’s 10,000th goal against Champions League opponent Midtjylland on Tuesday.

The £ 41 million signing, which also scored goal number 9999 after scoring the winning goal against Sheffield United, ended up close after being played by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The winger is off to a promising start to his Anfield career with three goals in his first eight games since signing from the Wolves in September.

Liverpool’s first goal was scored by Jock Smith in 1892 and Jota joins an impressive roster of history makers that includes Terry McDermott, Michael Owen and John Aldridge.

McDermott scored the 6.00 goal on the Charity Shield against West Ham in 1980, which was enough to give the Reds a 1-0 victory.

Aldridge scored the club’s 7,000th goal in a 2-1 win over Tottenham in 1989, while Owen scored the 8,000th goal in a 3-3 draw with Southampton in 2000.

Ten years later, Sotirios Kyrgiakos scored 9,000, but the score was less memorable as it came in a 2-1 loss to Blackpool.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who scored five goals during his career at Anfield, tweeted to say that he was happy to have played his role at the club by reaching 10,000.

But Carragher was also known for scoring on the wrong side of the field and his former teammate Dietmar Hamann jokingly asked whether own goals counted towards the total, given that the defender hit eight on his own goal.

Jota said he was proud to have scored the historic goal for Jurgen Klopp’s team, but insisted he was more than happy to help his team achieve three important points against a determined team from Midtjylland.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Jota said: ‘Well it’s a start. Obviously I am happy to score and help the team to win.

“Achieving that mark is always a good thing, but I am more happy with today’s victory.

“After a good win away from home, it is important to continue scoring points and we did our job. We get all three points, that’s the most important thing, and now [need to be] ready for the next game. ‘
