Manchester City have set the starting standard for passes in the Champions League after their dominant win over Marseille.
Pep Guardiola’s team won 3-0 in an empty Stade Velodrome with goals from Ferran Torres, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling keeping the Blues three points clear at the top of the group before a double header with Olympiakos.
The City manager was delighted with the victory and the control they enjoyed throughout the game made it one of the most satisfying 90 minutes of the season. The 842 passes the team attempted, the 765 of those completed and the 91 percent accuracy that that represents are the most any team has accomplished since the first 24 games, with matchday two scheduled to be completed on Wednesday. .
Three of City’s starters were able to beat the team average in passing accuracy.
Rodri managed to complete 95 of his 101 passes to finish with 94 percent, while behind him were two defenders who achieved the highest ratings. Kyle Walker (92 of 94) and Ruben Dias (98 of 100) scored a whopping 98 percent to help the Blues to an impressive victory.
Walker started in Marseille despite having to be substituted against West Ham at the weekend due to exhaustion. Praising his ability to recover quickly before the game, Guardiola later stated that the former Tottenham defender is currently in the best form of his career at City.
