Up to 50 players are feared to affect the Premier League project’s restart plan by refusing to return to action due to safety concerns.

The Mirror reports that a club executive believes there could be ‘two or three’ players from each club who decides not to return to complete the 2019-20 season.

Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero is among the players who have voiced their concerns, but others, such as West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini, who believes action should not resume until a vaccine is available, have also spoken out, but none have said they would refuse return.

Reports of a possible player revolt come days before players receive a presentation early next week on the strict quarantine proposals that will be put in place to protect them.

The player briefing is also meant to address return to training and both Premier League and club doctors are convinced that the new protocol will make it safe for players to return.

Project Restart is the name of the Premier League’s proposal to end English football’s hiatus for the coronavirus, as they plan a resumption in the middle of next month.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed Thursday that a host of high-flying stars have already discussed not signing individual league-issued forms amid fears about where they would drop if they test positive for COVID-19.

Premier League sources insist that the forms are not disclaimers, but simply a method of confirming that they are in accordance with their club’s coronavirus protocols.

The players, including Agüero, have made their stance clear by returning to action.

Agüero said: ‘Most of the players are afraid because they have children and families.

‘I am scared but I am with my girlfriend here and I will not be in contact with other people. I am locked in my house and the only person who could infect is my girlfriend.

“They say there are people who have it and don’t have any symptoms, but they still infect you. That’s why I’m here at home. Maybe I have the disease and I don’t even know it.

‘When a person is sick we will think:’ What is happening here? ‘I hope that a vaccine will be found soon so that all this ends.

Brighton boss Paul Barber has already revealed that there are reservations among a handful of players on the Seagulls first-team team.

He said: ‘Players have a really fair and fair amount of questions to ask about their own personal safety and that of their families. We, as your employers, need to be able to answer those questions.

“ We have a player whose partner has a serious medical condition; We must understand if he does not want to play or if he refuses to play from where we stand on it. We also have to understand what the players’ feelings are in any protocol that we agree on.

The clubs will discuss restarting the project at Monday’s shareholder meeting and resolve issues on controversial issues, such as the use of neutral venues and how the list of events will be spaced out to attract broadcasters.
