- Eni opposes joint operation with neighboring drilling rig
- The two companies have 120 days to submit the draft agreement.
SunThe Hana government ordered Eni SpA to start talks about combining his deposit in an offshore field with a neighboring explorer, according to a letter seen by Bloomberg.
The Italian commander, who operates the Sankofa oil and gas fields in a company with Vitol Holding BV, has 120 days to complete a draft of the so-called unit and operation agreement with Springfield Exploration and Production Ltd., wrote Energy Minister John -Peter Amewu in a letter dated April 9. Eni opposes such a move on the grounds that Springfield has not sufficiently proven its discovery to show that it shares a deposit with the Sankofa field, Amewu said.
Recent drilling on the Springfield block showed that its deposit has identical properties to that of the Sankofa reservoir, providing “more evidence that the two reservoirs are one and the same,” Amewu said. Springfield, owned by local investors, reported in December that the field has 1.5 billion barrels of oil reserves.
Spokespersons for the energy ministry and Eni confirmed the correspondence while declining to comment further. A Springfield spokesman did not answer calls.
Unification agreements are typical for the parties to jointly operate an oil and gas deposit. Increased production in energy assets by operators such as Eni and Tullow Oil Plc has helped Ghana achieve economic expansion of more than 6% in the past three years.
