The national soccer governing body shares its thoughts on the Black Stars boss, who recently oversaw their first games at the helm.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has endorsed new Black Stars coach CK Akonnor to finally be good despite mixed results in his first round of assignments.
Appointed West Africans head coach in January, Akonnor has had to wait until the beginning of this month to get the team into action due to the disruption of the international match schedule due to disruptions from the coronavirus pandemic.
It was definitely not a good start for the former Wolfsburg captain, as Ghana succumbed to a 3-0 loss to Mali in a friendly in Turkey. Three days later, the Black Stars bounced back with a resounding 5-1 win over the Asian champions and 2022 World Cup host Qatar in a second friendly match.
“We are here to fix the fundamentals and get it right. When we get it right, we will be very competitive, “said Okraku, as reported by Citisports.
“Once that happens, the big trophies will start landing again through Kotoka International Airport.
“We are very positive and given the support that the whole country has given us, we will be able to carry that objective of envy [Afcon title] once again.
“The Black Stars are in everyone’s heart and in his first two summons it is clear that he is a deep thinker.
“It is providing quality and it is only a matter of time before this team starts to take shape and we are competitive and interesting again.
“It’s been a long time that the Black Stars played interesting and entertaining football.
The October friendlies are part of Ghana’s preparations for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2022 double qualifying match against Sudan in November.
The Black Stars are looking to cement their place at the top of their qualifying group, having beaten South Africa and São Tomé and Príncipe for a successful start to the series in November of last year.
Akonnor is tasked with not only qualifying Ghana for the 2022 World Cup, but also guiding the team to win the Afcon tournament in Cameroon.
Ghana has been seeking an elusive fifth title since ruling the continent in Libya in 1982.
