José Mourinho believes Harry Kane is resolved with his new role at Tottenham Hotspur, seven months after considering his future at the club.
Kane, 27, revealed locked in by the coronavirus pandemic that he would seek options to improve his chances of winning trophies, but now feels the Spurs can compete for “something special” this season.
Mourinho has played him in one more role of No. 10, falling deeply and affecting the game like Dennis Bergkamp or Francesco Totti after years of comparisons to Alan Shearer as a traditional leader. The Portuguese coach assures that it is part of his squad that is maturing as a team.
“The way the team plays and wants to play, I think he feels very comfortable and it’s a very good way to play because he’s good in the area but also great outside the area,” Mourinho said.
“When you want to win, you do everything for your team. There is no room for individuals, there is no room for prima donnas. Even a top player like Harry has a fantastic spirit. “
Mourinho’s plan to use Kane differently was hatched early in his reign at Spurs, which will see him celebrate his first anniversary next month. The tactic relies on Heung-min Son and another winger, usually Lucas Moura so far, pushing forward when Kane takes the ball.
Eventually, Gareth Bale is expected to enter the team to support Kane with these forward runs that have seen the England captain provide eight assists this season, twice the amount of his closest rival, John McGinn.
“When the coach came in, it was something he said pretty early on, every time I go deep, wingers have to run after,” Kane said. “It doesn’t make sense for two or three players to fall, since it doesn’t give us space.
“It’s something I’ve been doing in my game for a while, but we’re looking at the final product a bit more. The passes are a little better, the finals are better and it draws a little more attention ”.
The Spurs’ win at Burnley on Monday night has seen predictions that they will face a title challenge. Kane and Son are the most productive partnership in the Premier League and there is backing on the bench in the form of Bale and Carlos Vinicius, while Dele Alli looks to work his way back to first-team plans.
Son, the Premier League’s top scorer, says Spurs are learning to win in different ways and that their team spirit is like that of a family, after recovering from the devastation of losing a three-goal lead to West Ham United.
“In the West Ham game we played amazingly and we drew, and we felt like we lost the game,” he said. “We fought to the end against Burnley, who was a very good example. It was Monday night, it was very cold, it was raining. It will give us a little boost in our mindset to be strong. Sometimes you need to win like this. We can’t always play well.
“The season is still long and we need these points and we have a winning mentality. It doesn’t matter who scores. The most important thing is the team, fighting for each other, helping each other. We are doing what we love, we should be like a family helping each other. ”
Alli could return to the team for the Europa League clash against Royal Antwerp on Thursday after being excluded from the Burnley travel party.
“We have a very good squad. We have a game on Thursday and Sunday and I’m not worried. The squad is very good, “said Mourinho.
“I trust the team, the team is coming together more and more. It is the feeling of a team. Even when we ‘lost’ to West Ham and I like to say we lost, and the team felt the pain together and they dealt with it together. “
