Godwin Agbenorku, a 20-year-old farmer from Lakpo-Agbakorpe in the South Tongu district of the Volta region, drowned in the Lottor River in Xavi at the weekend when the canoe they were sailing in capsized.
Shine Foster Agorsor, an assemblyman for the Xavi Electoral Area within Akatsi Southern District, said Godwin along with his fellow farmer were crossing the river from Xavi to their okro farm across the river in a canoe when the canoe capsized.
He said Etse Agbenyega along with the deceased were struggling to survive, but his colleague drowned and died before community members rescued him.
“The townspeople managed to rescue one, but Godwin drowned before they rescued him,” he said.
Agorsor said the deceased and his friend were known Okro farmers in the area.
He said the body of the deceased has been deposited in the St. Paul Hospital morgue while police investigations continue.
