Pollster Ben Ephson says whoever wins the Greater Accra region will win the day on December 7.
Contributing to the discussions on 3FM’s ‘Decision 2020’, Mr Ephson said that anyone who has won a majority in Parliament and the presidential elections will have to win the Greater Accra, Central and West regions.
However, it will not predict which of the two main political parties will win the Greater Accra region.
According to the pollster, who is also Managing Director of Dispatch newspaper, the importance of Greater Accra is magnified by the fact that it has a more than 33 percent increase in registered voters between 2016 and 2020, representing about 3.5 million votes.
The Greater Kumasi in the Ashanti region ranks second in terms of population with just over 3 million people.
Ephson’s comments come in the wake of increased political campaigns by the two major political parties; the Democratic National Congress and the New Patriotic Party (PNP).
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is currently campaigning in the Greater Accra region.
It will remain in the Region for the next four days.
Given the ethnic diversity of the region and Ghana’s top 10 ethnic groups, Ephson said 4 percent of Ghanaians vote along ethnic lines.
“So if you consider the fact that in Greater Accra the ethnic groups are very diversified. We have Gas 18.8%, Ewes 17.9%, Fantes 10.6%, Damgbes 10.3%, Ashanti 8.3%, Akuapims 4.8% “
Others are Kwahus accounting for 4.6 percent, followed by Akyem 4.4 percent, Dagombas 1.3 percent and lastly Nabdam 1 percent.
“Greater Accra virtually reflects a considerable number of people and reflects the mood and Greater Accra is going to be key. It is so fun and strategic that Greater Accra and, to some extent, the West and the Center vote along the same lines. One of the reasons the NDC did not do well is that Greater Accra, the second highest ethnic group is the sheep which is 17.9 and if the Volta region is the base of the sheep population. The NDC lost 100,000 votes in the Volta between 2012 and 2016, so Greater Accra has quite a sizeable number. “
Meanwhile, Wisdom Dewortor, a researcher at the SAPPI Economic Research Institute in Ghana, has predicted that the NDC could win the Greater Accra region with 52 percent of the vote.
According to the intelligence we chose, the NDC has asked the majority of its supporters to stay in Accra so they can snatch seats like Ayawaso West Wuogon, Adentan and Ashaiman’s for the NDC and if this should weigh, it means that the NDC can to get around 52 percent of the votes of the Greater Accra region. “
