Members of the Central Region security services yesterday launched a march through the main streets of Cape Coast to increase public confidence in their ability to maintain peace in the region in the run-up to the December general elections.

The four-hour march involved personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Prison Service, the Ghana Immigration Service and the military.

They sang throughout the march that took them through Pedu to Abura and then to Siwdu. From there, they continued to Kotokuraba and ended up at Cape Coast Castle.

Among the forces were robust men from the Formed Police Unit (FPU) who exhibited their toned physique.

Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, who led the march, said in a brief comment before the march began that the activity was intended to send a strong signal to people who were planning participate in crime to disturb the peace in the region.

He stressed that the police had a primary duty to ensure public order, as well as the safety and security of individuals, and would ensure that they carried out their duties without fear or favor.

She said the crime did not have a political color and as such urged young people in particular not to allow themselves to be used to perpetrate crimes.

“If someone commits a crime in the name of politics, the policy would be removed and the person or persons would be treated in accordance with the laws of the country,” he said.

Information for volunteers

DCOP Twumasi Sarpong said law enforcement agencies were always ready to protect the public from harm before, during and after the elections.

The Central Regional Police Commander encouraged people to respect the law and offer voluntary information that would help prevent and solve crime.

He said that since security agencies were ready to protect the public and ensure that the 2020 elections were peaceful, law-abiding citizens should support the police with information, as that was critical to fighting crime.

Professionalism and neutrality

DCOP Twumasi Sarpong also assured that the police would continue to show high levels of neutrality and professionalism in their work.

“We are here to build your faith in us, that we will uphold law and order and for you also to be assured that we will be with you always, so fear not,” he said.

In addition, he assured the public that this year’s elections would be peaceful at all times and asked for the cooperation of the people to make them a reality.
