Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed Manchester United’s tough lineup of matches for the 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Saturday, but claimed his team would have won if there were fans on the ground.
The Red Devils were controlled by the Blues four days after their memorable win over Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage of the Champions League, although Solskjaer’s team had the best chances.
Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had two impressive saves to deny Marcus Rashford in both halves, while United debutant Edinson Cavani had a goal effort blocked by Thiago Silva.
And Solskjaer strangely pointed to Old Trafford’s empty stadium for his inability to score three points on Saturday night.
The United manager told Sky Sports: ‘It was two teams that played in Europe this week and it showed a bit in the first half. In the second half we keep going and if the Stretford End is full we could get that ball over the line.
‘We fixed them, it was a good block from Thiago Silva and there were two good saves from the goalkeeper against Marcus.
“If we had that stadium or the Stretford End full, we could have created more urgency. Missing, missing that game.
You are here watching the game and it is a different sport. We miss the fans.
“It’s the same for all the teams, but everyone agrees that football now has a little less, the advantage is gone and we are eager to win back the fans.”
Fans are still unable to return to the football fields due to health risks in the UK after the coronavirus pandemic.
The UK government had planned a gradual return of fans in early October, but a spike in cases led to those plans being scrapped.
Manchester United have failed to win their first three home games for the first time since 1972.
Before the game against Chelsea, the Red Devils had lost their last two games at Old Trafford to Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur, the latter with a 6-1 beating at the hands of former United manager José Mourinho.
