The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has urged the public to wear nasal masks when going out, especially when it is difficult to observe social distancing to avoid transmission of the coronavirus.
Dr. DaCosta Aboagye, GHS Director of Health Promotion, who gave guidelines on the use of nasal masks at the Minister’s briefing on Tuesday, described various types of facial masks and the proper way to wear, remove and discard them.
He mentioned medical / surgical masks, N95, and cloth nose masks, and explained that wearing them should not replace preventive labels for handwashing with soap under running water, physical / social distancing observation, and other safety protocols.
He said that the wrong way to wear nasal masks carried a high risk of infection.
Below are the guidelines on the correct use of face masks:
1. Wash your hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based disinfectants before putting on a mask
2. Make sure your nasal masks completely cover your mouth and nose with no gaps between your face and the mask
3. Avoid touching the mask after you have worn it
4. Remove a mask by running a finger through the mask loop behind one ear and lift without touching the front of the mask.
Changing and removing the used mask
