A Cape Coast Circuit Court judge, Ms. Dorinda Arthur Smith, has wished that a convict she sentenced to 21 years in prison in forced labor die in prison for desecrating her two-year-old granddaughter.

Ms. Smith described the act as “cruel” and said the convict could not show sympathy for the survivor at that tender age. The convict, Kofi Appiah, 60, pleaded guilty to the desecration charge and was convicted by the court on his own statement.

In the indictment, Chief Inspector Charles Hevi told the court that the plaintiff, Mrs. Augustina Koomson, is the mother of the baby who lives in Benti Esarem, a suburb of Moree.

He said the convict is also a carpenter and uncle of the survivor’s father and lived in the same neighborhood as the complainant.

In recounting the incident, the Chief Inspector said that on Friday, October 16, around 0600 hours, the survivor disappeared while playing and the Plaintiff searched the entire area, but could not find the survivor.

The complainant then extended her search to the home of the baby’s father’s family, where she met her aunt.

The prosecutor said the girl’s aunt told the plaintiff that she heard a boy cry in Appiah’s room and was alarmed. He said the aunt managed to open the convict’s room, which was locked, and saw him having sex with the baby.

She quickly pulled the baby out of Appiah’s hands and saw a starchy substance on the baby’s vagina, legs, and dress.

The baby told the complainant about her ordeal at the hands of the convict that after the convict lured her into his room while playing, he took off her pants and had sex with her.

A complaint was filed at the Moree Police Station, where medical forms were issued to send the baby to hospital for examination, treatment and counseling.

Chief Inspector Hevi said on Saturday October 17 that the convict was arrested and the case was referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Cape Coast.
