The Blues saw their Argentine striker take a hit during a 1-1 draw with West Ham, with the severity of that ailment yet to be determined.

Pep Guardiola is still waiting for an update on Sergio Agüero’s injury to West Ham, and the Manchester City manager is more concerned about seeing two points fall in a 1-1 draw.

The Blues have scooped just eight points out of 15 on offer in the first five games of their 2020-21 campaign.

That comeback has seated them 11th in the table, as they now face the prospect of being without their all-time top scorer for the foreseeable future after seeing Aguero sent off against the Hammers.

Asked about their Argentine leader on the back of a frustrating afternoon against the Hammers, Guardiola said BT Sport: “Injury. No, I don’t know. [what it is].

“It looks like a muscle injury.”

City are far from the only title contender to have suffered an inconsistent start to their national campaign this season, but Guardiola admits his team has work to do after finding an elusive winning formula once again in the East End.

He said, after watching half-time substitute Phil Foden nullify a spectacular start by Michail Antonio: “We started very well, we conceded a goal the first time they arrive. They defend very deep and we had the opportunity at the end to score the goal. Now we move on.

“I think we did not play badly except the last 10 minutes of the first half. They have a lot of players coming into the area, we had periods of that but we had chances to score and we didn’t.

“We started very well. We suffer in the last 10 or 15 minutes of the first half. In the second half we were better and scored early. We had the opportunities we needed to win the match, but unfortunately we couldn’t score.

“We create enough. Their defenders were defending so deep that it is difficult to find spaces, but we had the opportunities.

“I’m not a guy who can predict the future. We are already down seven points, which is a lot. But we have fought hard for many reasons. We have to take things match by match and see what happens ”.
