Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy almost quit football in 2014
According to The Guardian, Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy almost stopped playing football in 2014.
The Senegalese international is today the club’s starting goalkeeper, having arrived from French Rennes in the summer. Becoming Chelsea’s goalkeeper is no small feat and shows just how far the player has come since his dark days.
“If someone had told me six years ago when I didn’t have a club that I would end up here, I wouldn’t have even bothered to look at them or listen to them.”
Just six years ago, Mendy was released from the French side of Cherbourg and was on unemployment benefit. This, combined with having to take care of a pregnant wife, is fair to say that Mendy had serious trouble thinking about it.
He eventually returned to training with the Le Havre reserves and moved to Marseille to revive his career. Now number one for both the club and the country, Mendy has changed his life.
“I had the opportunity to go to Marseille and there they gave me a test. Fortunately for me, it worked. “
It is not just your own fortune that you have been reinventing yourself. By keeping two clean sheets in his last three appearances, the 28-year-old has also breathed new life into a struggling Chelsea bottom line.
Hard work and miracles go hand in hand
Resuscitating one’s career after a year in the desert is no easy task. It not only takes good luck, but also dedication and hard work.
Mendy thanked his family for helping him through difficult times. The player himself was not without doubts. However, he persevered and is now reaping the benefits.
“I had many, many doubts during that time. But it was thanks to my family that helped me so much in those moments to keep me strong ”.
Mendy was a surprise choice to solve the Chelsea goalkeeper problem. An unglamorous option, it has proven that reputation can only get you so far.
If anything, he has replaced the world’s most expensive goalkeeper at one of the continent’s elite clubs. Something that would have sounded beyond absurd just half a decade ago.
