The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Greater Accra region has stepped up its efforts to meet its goal of two million new members by the end of the year.

Mr. Bernard Brown, the NHIA Greater Accra Regional Director, noted that the region lagged behind in achieving the goal due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brown said the region had so far registered 1.7 million new members this year, which is about 76 percent.

This is in addition to the 1.78 million active members.

Mr Brown said this at the Greater Accra regional biannual operational performance review meeting held in Accra.

The meeting, which brought together managers, reviewed regional operations in terms of membership and revenue drive accomplishments, logistical challenges, and the way forward.

The NHIA Regional Director said there was a drop of 100,000 members in the second quarter compared to the first quarter of the year, adding that it was right for managers to discuss the factors that contributed to the drop.

Mr. Brown said the region would begin house-to-house and door-to-door registration to increase membership.

In addition, the NHIA would also begin with the registration of new members in churches, mosques, markets and organizations.

He praised Ayawaso and Weija for registering a marginal increase in their membership drive, adding that the NHIA would find out the reasons for the increase so that those who performed below average could learn from them.

Brown said the region’s revenue fell and asked managers to come up with strategic ideas to boost revenue.

He said that without revenue, the NHIA would go to its knees.
