Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah received a multi-year contract extension after four seasons with the Gold and Blacks.

Mensah, who was named club captain at the start of the season, has been outstanding this season, helping the club to the play-offs and quarter-finals of the MLS is back tournament.

The 30-year-old’s leadership and command displays at the rear have made the Ohio-based club one of the meanest defenses in MLS.

“We are delighted to announce that Jonathan has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Club,” said Crew SC President and CEO Tim Bezbatchenko.

“In addition to having a season worthy of the ‘Defender of the Year’ award in 2020 and being one of the best defenders in MLS, Jonathan is someone who leads by example and serves as a role model for younger players. He has earned the respect of his teammates, coaches and the Central Ohio community for his efforts on and off the field and we are delighted that he has made the commitment to remain in Columbus, ”he added.

Mensah has played 95 games for the club, 92 of them as a starter.

He is a two-time Defender of the Year in Crew, winning in 2018 and 2019, and was also awarded Ohio Health’s Humanitarian of the Year award in 2017.
