It emerged that the suspects in the case of the murdered Mfantseman deputy, Ekow Quansah Hayford, were arrested after his stolen mobile phone was traced.
On October 9, Chief Inspector Seth Frimpong, who presented brief facts of the case to an Accra circuit court, said police received information that some six armed robbers had put up barriers on the Abeadze-Dominase Mankesim road.
According to him, upon the arrival of the police at the scene, they found several parked vehicles with several injured victims.
He said that while Patrick Asante, a KIA truck driver, and Uncle Isaah, the late MP’s driver, were seriously injured, the MP was dead.
Police subsequently cleared the road for traffic and transported the victims to Winneba and Cape Coast hospitals for medical attention.
Chief Inspector Frimpong said eyewitnesses told them that the MP arrived with his campaign team aboard a Mitsubishi pickup in NPP colors.
The robbers then began firing shots at the vehicle, bursting the tires and causing the car to crash into a ditch.
The robbers quickly surrounded them and demanded all of their valuables while pointing a gun at Stephen Allan, who they assumed was the MP.
Continuing with his narration, the Chief Inspector told the court that it was the MP who confessed and identified himself.
“So they jumped on him and picked up his Samsung Galaxy A50 mobile phone and demanded money,” he added.
But Mr. Quansah Hayford begged them to follow him home for money, as he had nothing with him.
It is alleged that he explained that he had spent all his money during the campaign tour; a revelation that angered the thieves and caused them to shoot him.
Chief Inspector Frimpong said that in the course of their investigations, the police traced the MP’s Samsung Galaxy A50 mobile phone to Kumasi Aboabo, where the first arrest was made.
The suspect, Nasiru Fudailu, who was in possession of the phone, told police that he bought the device at a cost of ¢ 750 to one, Alhassan Abubakar.
Fudailu, then took the police to Kumasi Akwatialine, where they also arrested Abubakar.
During his questioning, Abubakar alleged that he also bought the phone from Mohammed (no last name) for ¢ 650.
However, efforts to track down said Mohammed have proven futile. He is believed to have fled and is currently wanted by the police.
Chief Inspector Frimpong told the court that a deeper investigation led to the arrest of more suspects, bringing the total number to six.
Among them are Alhasan Abubakar alias Fulani, a telephone repairman; Nasiru Fudailu, businessman; Alhassan Mahama Yaya, alias Mystical Cloud, a resident of Dansoman; and Amadu Yakubu, a mobile money marketer.
The others are Haruna Osmanu, a merchant, and Adam Alhasan.
All have pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and larceny.
Meanwhile, the Circuit Court chaired by Evelyn Asamoah has placed the six suspected thieves in police custody to reappear on October 30, 2020.
