Nene Kwaku Agblorm II, a traditional ruler and 26 other alleged secessionists, have now been charged with the crime of treason.

It is said that the accused on September 25 of this year in the Volta Region, prepared to carry out an illegal act and a company to usurp the executive powers of the Republic.

In an amended charge sheet, they also face charges of conspiracy, participation in the campaign of a prohibited organization, namely western Togo, conspiracy to cause illegal harm, cause illegal harm, theft, gun disturbances.

The Court did not read the charges and facts to the accused.

This prompted various arguments from seven lawyers representing some of the defendants as to why the police were in court and on what charges.

According to the various lawyers, their clients had not been well fed while in custody and some of the accused had serious health problems as they had been denied the right to take their medication.

According to the lawyers, his clients were mostly those who earned their families’ living.

The lawyers prayed for the court to admit their clients on bail so they could seek medical attention, adding that they would not hamper the investigations.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sylvester Asare informed the Court that he had no jurisdiction to grant bail to the defendants following the new charges.

ASP Asare said that the Police had complied with the orders of the Court, including the access of the accused to their lawyers and relatives.

According to the prosecution, the Police had also been taking some of the defendants who suffered gunshot wounds to the hospital.

The Court presided over by Mrs. Rosemary Baah Torsu, in its ruling, declined the bond, saying that it also lacked jurisdiction to grant it.

The court adjourned the matter until November 9.

In a related incident, 51 alleged secessionists were fired by the court. However, shortly after their discharge, they were arrested again and charged with serious crimes of treason, among others.

The 51, who were placed in preventive detention, will reappear on November 4.
