Michael Owen says Liverpool can still have a successful season, despite Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

Following his knee injury in the Merseyside derby against Everton, the inspiring defender looks set to miss most of the season, if not all, due to having to undergo surgery.

It has led many to speculate whether the Reds can maintain the sensational form of the past two seasons, which have seen them win both the Champions League and the Premier League.

Speaking about BT Sport, Rio Ferdinand said that Jurgen Klopp’s team is still among the most feared teams in Europe, but that Bayern Munich are probably the favorites.

Owen disagreed, arguing that Liverpool should be the favorite for the competition, and that his team is still strong enough to fight for the titles despite V an Dijk’s absence.

“I think they can,” Owen said when asked if they could still have a successful campaign. “I think a lot of people are rightly thinking, is this the season that it falls apart right now?

“Because there is no doubt about it, in my mind, that it is the best middle school in the world. You’re going to miss it.

“His presence is reassuring, everything about him is first class and it is a heavy blow.

“It’s not just for a couple of months, it seems like a season.

“Once the dust settles though, get out of the way tonight, all of a sudden you start looking at them and you think they still have some amazing players.”

He added: “I agree with Rio, I would probably even put them a little higher.

“I think Bayern Munich will look at Liverpool and think they are the team to beat. I think they have been the best team in Europe for the last two seasons.”
