Jack Wilshere has jumped to the defense of Arsenal misfit Mesut Ozil, claiming he is the club’s best player despite his omission from Mikel Arteta’s teams.
The German playmaker has been left out of Arsenal’s official player allocation for the Premier League and Europa League, which means that he will be excluded from the first team contest until at least January.
Reacting to his omission by posting a statement via social media, Ozil criticized the Gunners for lack of “loyalty” and said he was saddened by their exclusion from the team.
Among those who came out in support of the midfielder, who makes £ 350,000 a week, was former England and Tottenham Hotspur forward Gary Lineker, who tweeted: ‘Every footballer wants to play. Not being able to do it, regardless of salary, destroys the soul. ”
But Ozil has also found favor with his former Arsenal teammate Jack Wilshere, who backed Lineker’s stance.
Wilshere, who spent a decade at Arsenal between 2008 and 2018, stated that Ozil would love to play and that, as the best player in the club, he should be part of Arteta’s plans at the very least.
“Catch Gary, especially when you’re the best player!” Wilshere said in response to Lineker on Twitter.
Wilshere himself is also looking to play again after West Ham’s summer pitch, and has been training on the local playing fields to try to stay fit and earn a move as a free agent.
Ozil arrived at Emirates Stadium to much fanfare as the club’s record signing for £ 42.5m in 2013, but has had an uneven time on the North London side.
Although he has since helped the club win four FA Cups, he has been gradually losing popularity since the departure of Arsene Wenger as coach in 2018, who recently claimed that Arteta was ‘wasting’ his talent by putting him on the bench.
He hasn’t played a single game since blocking, the last time he appeared in a 1-0 win over West Ham in March, where he started and provided the assist to the winner Alexandre Lacazette.
In a statement following his exclusion from Arsenal’s Premier League team, the 32-year-old said: ‘This is a difficult message to write to the @Arsenal fans I have played for in recent years,’ he wrote.
“ I am really deeply disappointed that I have not signed up for the @PremierLeague season just yet.
‘By signing my new contract in 2018, I pledged my loyalty and fidelity to the club that I love, Arsenal, and I am saddened that this was not reciprocated. As I just discovered, loyalty is hard to come by these days.
“I’ve always tried to stay positive from week to week that maybe there is a chance to come back to the team soon again. That is why I have been silent until now.
Whatever happens, I will keep fighting for my chance and will not let my eighth season at Arsenal end like this. I can promise you that this difficult decision will not change anything in my way of thinking: I will continue to train to the best of my ability and whenever possible I will use my voice against inhumanity and for justice. ‘
