Bayern Munich have won the European Cup six times in their history Bayern Munich – Atlético de Madrid – Group stage of the Champions LeagueKick off: 20:00 BST, Wednesday, October 21 Venue of events: Allianz Arena Coverage: Live text coverage on the BBC Sport website
Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick says it will be “extremely difficult” for them to repeat the feats of last season as they begin their Champions League defense.
The reigning champions face Atlético de Madrid in their first Group A match.
Bayern had a shortened offseason as a result of their European success, with just 26 days between their victory over Paris St-Germain in the final and their first Bundesliga game this season.
“It’s about playing one game at a time,” Flick said.
Bayern also won the Bundesliga and the German Cup for a memorable treble last season, but since then several big names have left the Allianz Arena, including Thiago Alcantara, who joined Liverpool, and Philippe Coutinho, who returned to Barcelona after a loan period.
But Bayern increased their ranks with four signings just before the transfer window closed, including the return of Brazilian winger Douglas Costa to Munich on loan from Juventus.
“It is a different team than last season and each team has its strengths and weaknesses,” said Flick, who will not feature injured Tanguy Nianzou and Leroy Sane.
“For now, I am quite satisfied. We have only had one week of training with everyone together, but now there is more solidity in our squad. What will be very important is not having injuries.”
Atlético hope to avoid a second consecutive loss to a German rival after losing to RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals last season.
His summer signing, Luis Suárez, has scored three goals in three appearances since leaving Barcelona.
The Uruguayan will be accompanied in front by Joao Félix, with Diego Costa ruled out due to a thigh injury.
