Being critical is fine, but it is measured against Zinedine Zidane

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane’s three consecutive Champions Leagues should represent much more than one or two losses.

At Real Madrid, a certain standard is expected at the club that exceeds the standards of all other clubs in the world. Los Blancos have achieved a greatness that most other clubs can only dream of and therefore the players and coaches associated with the team are expected to be the best of the best.

Therefore, Madridistas do not like performances like Real Madrid’s defeat against Cádiz last Saturday. Neither should they. Such a performance is unforgivable for a club with the resources, the history and the expectations of the Real.

As a coach, Zinedine Zidane has a lot of responsibility in performances like this. He sets the lineup, dictates the tactics, makes the changes, and sets the mindset. So when the team fails in all respects, he must answer for part of that failure.

But here are two keys. Zidane responds for “something” of that failure. Not all. And second, you must answer for equipment failures that day. They were not that poor in their other parties, even though some of the main problems were persistent problems that were not exposed so badly.

Real Madrid fans should know that the team is not prepared to be at its best

It is necessary for the fans to be constructively critical and help to promote that high level necessary at Real Madrid. However, it is equally important that the fan base is reasonable in regards to their manager and their expectations, especially as the team rebuilds.

Think of it this way. Much of the discussion within the fanbase is about Kylian Mbappé, Eduardo Camavinga and Erling Haaland. The future. Real is a team that looks to the future, because it is clear and obvious that this team is not yet at the level to compete for Champions League titles. His win in the Spanish league title in 2019-2020 was very positive in its own right, and Zidane deserves great credit for it.

Zidane cannot control the injuries. It cannot control COVID-19 by creating an unstable economic environment that prevented the Real from making signings. And you can’t even control everything that happens on the field.

Calling Zidane a bad coach is telling a lie that is easy to refute. Bad coaches don’t win three consecutive Champions League titles. A team would collapse on itself if its manager were so pitiful. They would not accomplish an almost unthinkable feat.

However, calling Zidane infallible would also be illogical. Even then, he had his weaknesses as a manager. Just as fans do with players, those weaknesses can be addressed constructively and productively, in a way that is respectful and mindful of Zidane’s accomplishments as a talent screener and manager at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Criticism is a necessary part of being a fan, because the fan base sets the tone and demands the best of the club. But at the same time, respect and measured reactions are equally necessary, as they prevent drastic decisions or toxicity from damaging the club.
