An out-of-shape Lionel Messi is a rare thing, but that’s what Barcelona are up against as Ronald Koeman insists the Argentine will return to his hypnotic prime soon.
The Argentine has scored just once in the Catalans’ first four LaLiga matches so far, with Koeman suffering a surprising first loss since rejoining the Camp Nou on Saturday, falling 1-0 to Getafe.
Messi’s efforts to part ways with Barca dominated summer rumors, but since reluctantly deciding to stay, the forward has not been himself.
“Perhaps, at this point, Messi’s performances could be better,” Koeman said.
But he’s happy, he’s working hard and he wants to be captain. I don’t have a single complaint.
He has also been unlucky. He hit the post (in the 1-0 loss to Getafe on Saturday) and on another day that comes in.
“I have no doubts about his performances and we will see him (at his best) in the next matches, I’m sure.”
Messi could be thinking about next summer when his contract expires, and Manchester City have been the most linked to a raid by the icon of those who want to leave.
However, he will want to leave Barcelona, where he has spent his entire career, at the top, and nothing would be better than that long-awaited fifth Champions League.
Koeman’s men will begin their European campaign on Tuesday against Hungarian champion Ferencvaros in Group G, where they will also face Dynamo Kyiv and big clashes with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus.
Barça will host the eternal Real Madrid on Saturday, with the Spanish champion already three points ahead in LaLiga.
