George Asamaney, lawyer for James Nana Womba, the main suspect in the murder of Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, has called for an independent investigation into the death of his client in police custody.
Mr. Asamaney also said that Womba’s autopsy should also be carried out by an independent body.
In reaction to Womba’s death in Accra, the lawyer said:
“We are all shocked. I called Womba’s mother this morning so we could have conversations. Shortly after, I received a call from Womba’s mother that armed personnel from the Police Department of Criminal Investigation had informed her of the death of her son.
According to the lawyer, Womba’s mother said the police asked her to be present for an autopsy to be performed on Womba’s body tomorrow.
The lawyer said the family would like to go examine the body, adding that in the last court session, nothing suggested that Womba was ill and we never expected such a thing.
“We ask the police administration to allow an independent investigation so that we can start from there,” he said.
Womba is said to have been the mastermind behind the death of the law professor along with three others.
So far two people, including Opambour Agya Badu Nkansah, are in police custody.
Womba, last Wednesday, appeared in Kaneshie District Court looking healthy.
However, his accomplice Nkansah was unwell and the police took him to hospital.
Womba and Nkansah have been charged with conspiracy and murder.
The Prosecutor’s Office had informed the Court that the Police were on the heels of the other two suspects.
Professor Benneh was murdered in cold blood at his residence at Adjiriganor in September this year.
