Andrea Pirlo referred to his team as ‘young’ and ‘naive’ after they drew 1-1 against the promoted Crotone on Saturday.
Pirlo believes that players like Federico Chiesa, who signed from Fiorentina during the recent transfer window, need to gain experience to mature after being given a direct red card for a taco challenge to Luca Cigarini.
Pirlo claims that the international rift has impeded such growth within the team and admits that the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex Sandro, Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala influenced his defeat.
“Unfortunately we went down to 10 men in the last two games due to our mistakes, but we are a young team that needs to work and there hasn’t been much time for that with so many internationals,” he told DAZN.
“Young players need to gain experience playing games and it can happen that they make naive mistakes as part of the learning process.
“We build a quality team, but it is still a work in progress and it takes time. Guys will learn through mistakes, sadly that also means taking some risks in the early games of the season.
“We made some mistakes at press time, but like I said, these things happen while we are still greasing the machine. Yesterday we only spent half an hour on this tactical move in training, so it will improve. ”
Additionally, Pirlo missed Cristiano Ronaldo and Weston McKennie after the couple tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday.
While Alex Sandro, Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala were unavailable to the Juve coach as they continue to recover from injury.
The absence of such players prompted Pirlo to seek out those less experienced players to prepare.
However, the coach admitted that they had “very little time” to practice their new training before their game with Crotone.
He said: ‘We had very little time to practice, we had a first training session all together yesterday. We have players like Chiesa and Morata who attack the space, so the idea was to look for passes between the lines, and that’s how the goal was created. ‘
Crotone boss Giovanni Stroppa was proud of his teams’ performance but claims his team should have taken advantage of Chiesa’s red card.
“We have conceded some goals with naive mistakes, but I still believe that we are on the right track,” he said after the match.
“ We could have done more of the extra man and been sharper in the final third, going one-on-one, but we still did well with 11 versus 11 and 11 versus 10.
“This is not the best Juve team, but we saw that they still had remarkable talents to come off the bench and bring in new elements, so we can be proud of this result.”
