Raheem Sterling scored his fourth goal of the season for Man City
Substitute captain Raheem Sterling scored the only goal as Manchester City returned to winning ways in their Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Sterling, who received the bracelet from coach Pep Guardiola with Fernandinho on the bench and Kevin de Bruyne injured, finished off the rebound after Phil Foden saved in the 23rd minute.
Arsenal had chances to equalize, but City goalkeeper Ederson denied them with three excellent saves in the first half and both David Luiz and Pepe were deflected with free throws in good positions after the break.
The result extended a miserable run of results away from home against fellow ‘top six’ Arsenal members. They have now failed to win in their last 29 meetings of this type, since a success at City in 2015.
Guardiola has yet to lose a point against the Gunners in five meetings at the Etihad Stadium since succeeding Manuel Pellegrini as City manager in 2016.
More importantly for their team, after getting just one point from their last two games, they were able to claim maximum points in this one.
The three points came even without De Bruyne and with the return of Sergio Agüero restricted to one hour of action in his first appearance since June after recovering from a knee injury.
- Relive Man City’s victory over Arsenal
Teacher hits student
As you would expect from a meeting between Guardiola and the man he spent three and a half years together in the City dug-out, Mikel Arteta, this was a tactical blitz.
At one point, Willian was operating as a center forward and Sterling was sitting in the middle of the field. After Agüero’s departure, Bernado Silva briefly assumed the role of the false nine as both men tried to keep the other guessing.
Arteta was able to bring in the £ 45 million new kid, Thomas Partey, for his debut near the end, but the truth is that he doesn’t have the strength in depth that Guardiola is given.
Both sides suffered interruptions in preparation, although the loss of Aymeric Laporte and Benjamin Mendy through injury had less of an impact on City as the delay in finding out that the Premier League was prepared to allow Kieran Tierney to play had on the Gunners.
Scotland’s local health authority had told the Arsenal defender to isolate himself due to a “close contact” violation on international service.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the Gunners lost defender Rob Holding to a hamstring injury in the warmup.
All of this contributed to a slow start from which they never really recovered, as City kept their first clean sheet of the season with a defensive performance a far cry from the one that saw them concede five against Leicester in their previous home game.
Excellent Ederson
When it comes to debating who has been Guardiola’s best signing as City manager, despite the excellence of Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva and, briefly, Leroy Sane, surely Ederson must emerge victorious.
A £ 35 million purchase from Benfica after Joe Hart was dumped and Claudio Bravo flopped, Ederson won Premier League titles in his first two seasons and the Gold Glove last season, despite the only trophy from the City was the EFL Cup.
With new signing Ruben Dias still settling in, Laporte missing and Nathan Ake just making his fifth Blues appearance, Guardiola needs the Brazilian to be a constant presence.
It could have been that Bukayo Saka’s shot from an angle was deflected as the visitors tried to respond to Sterling’s first goal, but Ederson took no chances.
However, his two stops at the end of the opening period were excellent. Saka was again the man who was denied a footstand first when the teenager found himself clean after playing a one-two with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Within minutes, Ederson was denying Aubameyang with an even better save. As the flag was immediately raised to signal offside, nothing appeared on it. The true value of Ederson’s work was not apparent until television replays showed that the assistant referee’s decision was incorrect. Without the intervention of the goalkeeper, Arsenal would have been level.
Ederson made another save, from a header from Pepe, at the start of the second half, although compared to what had happened before, that was quite routine.
Given that Arsenal also couldn’t find their range with a pair of free throws, Ederson’s efforts mean the Gunners have now lost seven straight league games against City, the first time they have done so against any opponent since Ipswich in the decade. 1970.
