The standard-bearer of the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for what he described as poor implementation of the free upper secondary school (SHS) policy. .
While admitting that the free SHS policy was a good policy, he said its poor implementation had brought much confusion to the education sector and stress on parents and their children.
He noted, for example, that the two-way system that came with the policy had affected students and parents, adding that the next NDC government would abolish the two-way system in his first year in office.
He spoke at a mini rally in the park of the Abura Roman Catholic School on Thursday as part of his tour of the Central Region.
Infrastructure
Mahama said it was regrettable that the development of the educational infrastructure necessary for the effective implementation of the policy was lacking.
He asked how chickens could be bought for breeding without first having chicken coops.
He said it was necessary to establish the necessary infrastructure for the successful implementation of the policy.
Abandoned projects
Mr. Mahama expressed his dismay at the neglect of the school blocks built by the NDC.
He said that across the country there were abandoned schools and lizards and snakes taking over incomplete infrastructure.
Mahama said the main NDC infrastructure development in Ghana included the Kotokuraba market and the Cape Coast Stadium.
He said the next NDC government would build miniature versions of the Kejetia market across the country to ensure merchants conduct business in a decent environment.
Employment creation
In addition, he assured that if given the mandate, his government will work to provide skills to young people through apprenticeships so that they can earn a decent living.
Earlier in Ekumfi Otuam, Mr. Mahama promised to revisit a proposed clean coal factory for the people of Otuam to help provide work for the youth.
Security
Mahama also criticized the Akufo-Addo government for the current state of security, describing it as terrible.
He said that the safety of all Ghanaians was important and remained the responsibility of the president, who is the commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, adding that Ghanaians should feel safe.
Murder of MP
Referring to the recent murder of the Member of Parliament by Mfantseman, Mr. Ekow Kwansah Hayford, and other robberies in the country, Mr. Mahama said it appeared that the government had lost control of security.
He said it was terrifying that armed robbers could block a major highway like the Accra-Cape Coast highway, and said this meant there was something wrong with the security system.
Worrying
The former president said it was worrying that weapons and weapons had reached the hands of vigilantes who now had more sophisticated weapons than the nation’s security personnel, and said this was compounding insecurity in the country.
He ensured that the next NDC government would ensure that Ghanaians moved without fear of being attacked by armed robbers. – # GhanaVotes2020
