There was drama in Accra High Court on Friday when Daniel Asiedu, the man accused of killing former Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa-North in 2016, Mr. JB Danquah-Adu, went ‘crazy’.

Asiedu, who is on trial for murder, caused a stir in the courtroom after the presiding judge refused to allow him to speak.

He banged on the seat he was sitting in and yelled that he had to speak because “there is a lot of corruption in the system.”

Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson, who was in the courtroom, reported that Asiedu added that if the court does not allow him to speak, he will not allow the other cases in court to continue.

The prison officials who brought Asiedu to court warned him to hold back and not disrupt court proceedings.

He fell silent afterwards, but intermittently let out a heavy sigh, muttering in the process.

“Mmmmmm, mmmmmmmm,” he sighed loudly, Ebo Hawkson reported.

Asiedu Outbursts

Asiedu is known for his statements and outbursts in court, including mentioning the names of the people who, according to him, allegedly hired him to kill the MP.

Every time the presiding judge, Judge Lydia Osei Marfo, gives him a chance to speak, he goes into a frenzy, makes accusations and complains about his pre-trial status at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

He has also confessed to the crime on many occasions and has also complained of death threats.

Talk to your lawyer

During Friday procedures [October 16, 2020], the presiding judge, Magistrate Lydia Osei Marfo, had ordered the prosecution to release all the documents on which it was intended to rely for the trial and to also notify the defendants and their lawyers.

He subsequently postponed the trial until November 3 of this year.

Immediately after that, Asiedu raised his hands for a chance to speak.

Judge Marfo told her that she would not allow her to speak as she had allowed in previous hearings and that any concerns she had should be referred to her lawyer (Asiedu).

“I didn’t bring my ears to listen to you today, so whatever you want to say, go tell your attorney,” the presiding judge said.

It was after that that the accused person went ‘crazy’, messing up the entire courtroom, reported Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson, who was in the courtroom.

Drama

Prosecutors have charged Asiedu and Vincent Bosso with conspiracy to commit robbery, while Asiedu has been charged separately with murder and robbery.

Both have pleaded not guilty to the crimes.

However, the case has had its dramatic part.

Even before the trial began, Asiedu’s attorney, Mr. Augustine Obour, presented a case for a psychiatric examination.

However, the examination revealed that Asiedu was mentally healthy to stand trial.

At one point, Asiedu asked Mr. Danquah-Adu’s family to forgive him for killing the MP.

“Now I have given my life to God; I want to tell the truth so that the MP’s family forgive me, ” he said.

Murder

Mr. Danquah-Adu was murdered at his residence in Shiashie, near Accra, on February 9, 2016.

It is the case of the prosecution that Asiedu and Bosso planned to go on a robbery wave, but Bosso decided not to participate in the robbery again and went home.

Asiedu, the prosecution, said he went to Shiashie and chose the MP’s house as a place to rob.

The prosecution further said that in the course of searching for items to steal, Asiedu made a noise that woke up the MP.

According to the prosecution, a fight ensued that led Asiedu to stab the deputy in the neck and chest, killing him in the process.
