Martínez admits contract offer
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez admitted that he was presented with the opportunity to stay at the Emirates Stadium this summer before leaving the club to join Aston Villa.
Martinez starred towards the end of last season following the injury of Gunners No. 1 Bernd Leno, helping the club win the FA Cup.
But Leno’s return to full physical condition before the start of the 2020/21 campaign meant that Martinez would be forced to play a supporting role at the bank, prompting him to explore a new company and join Villa.
Now, however, the former Reading and Sheffield Wednesday loan has admitted that Mikel Arteta offered him the chance to stay at the club.
“Arteta is a great coach, I met him as a teammate and he will be one of the best coaches in the world in a few years,” Martinez said, as reported by AS.
“He said he had two number one, he didn’t know who was going to play, he didn’t know who was going to start the league because we were both at a great level, I had finished well and Leno had got injured playing well.”
