It will be 10 years from the day Everton last beat Liverpool when the teams line up at Goodison Park for the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
How times have changed. FSG had just taken over the Reds, Roy Hodgson was months away from his dire reign, and the Toffees cheerfully chanted that their neighbors would be relegated.
Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta scored for David Moyes’s men, but that 2-0 win was the last time Everton beat Liverpool and the Premier League champions have had the right to brag about their rivals for a decade.
Saturday’s early start is perhaps the best opportunity Everton have had since that afternoon in 2010. Jurgen Klopp was quick to praise his Merseyside rivals before the game, who are flying high at the top of the league, undefeated and reinforced. for genuine quality in the team.
They will look to emulate Moyes’ side this weekend, while the trip down memory lane could bring back nightmares for Liverpool fans.
Here’s a look at where the starting teams ended up and what they’re up to now …
EVERTON
Tim Howard – The American was a mainstay of the Toffees’ goal for 10 years and ended his career after joining the Colorado Rapids in MLS. Despite retiring last year, he returned with the USL’s Memphis 901 team, a team that he is minority-owned and works for as a sports director.
Leighton Baines – It’s no wonder the club legend has returned to work for Everton after retiring in July this year. The 35-year-old was appointed a developmental coach and his role is to assist youth at the upper levels of the academy in their professional development.
Phil Jagielka – The central defender is still a 38-year-old Premier League player. He returned to childhood Sheffield United after they were promoted to the top flight, but is struggling to gain playing time on Chris Wilder’s team. He has only made one appearance so far this season and it looks like it will be his finishing touch.
Sylvain Distin – The Frenchman played 210 games for Everton and established himself as a firm favorite with fans. He played one season for Bournemouth before retiring. Distin was famous for his fitness as a player, so it’s no surprise that he now works as a strength and conditioning coach.
Phil Neville – The former club captain spent eight seasons at Goodison before earning the coaching title as Moyes’ assistant before his brother Gary’s fateful and short-lived stint in Valencia. Neville then took over the England women’s team and led it to the 2019 World Cup semi-finals, but will step down with Sarina Wiegman.
Seamus Coleman – No other player from the team that beat Liverpool a decade ago is still playing except the Irishman. The 32-year-old still has a lot left in the tank and is one of the seasoned bosses on Carlo Ancelotti’s side. His derby experience will be a huge asset for Everton this weekend.
John Heitinga – The defensive midfielder retired in 2016 at Ajax and joined Fulham as a free agent before moving to Hertha Berlin and later to the Dutch giants. He now works at the famed Ajax academy as an under-18 coach and is learning to work as a coach.
Mikel Arteta – The most successful member of the Everton 2010 alumni is without a doubt Arteta. After leaving Everton in 2011 to join Arsenal, he played for five more seasons before becoming manager. He excelled as a substitute for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before taking the helm at the Emirates, where he is already impressive for having won the FA Cup last season.
Tim Cahill – One of the best headers on the ball in Premier League history, the Australian settled at Everton before moving to the New York Red Bulls, Shanghai Shenhua, Hangzhou Greentown, Melbourne City, Millwall and Jamshedpur. The widely traveled midfielder is regularly seen on television or heard on the radio as an expert, but he also works with academy players at Everton.
Leon Osman – Another Everton kid who traded his boots for the mic, Osman has worked for the BBC, Sky Sports and Premier League Productions. He was a club player for 14 years (with two loan spells at Derby and Carlisle) and retired a Toffee.
Yakubu – The 35-year-old retired three years ago after leading the line at Everton for four seasons before jumping to Leicester and then Blackburn. He joined the Chinese team from Guangzhou R&F, Al-Rayyan in Qatar, Reading, Kayserispor and finally Coventry City. You have several different business interests to keep you busy.
Honorable mentions:
Tony Hibbert: Hibbert came off the bench during the derby win and remained an important part of Moyes’ broader squad. That said, there was an embarrassing end to Hibbert’s 18-year career at Everton when he found out he was going to be released on the club’s website. He will be remembered as a great server for nearly two decades by fans and has one of the most outrageous updates to life after football. He now runs a carp fishery in northern France, visited by enthusiastic fishermen from around the world.
LIVERPOOL
Pepe Reina – The Spaniard remained number one at Liverpool until he joined Simon Mignolet. Reina then moved to Napoli on loan before a short stint at Bayern Munich and then at Napoli once again. Two years ago he signed for AC Milan before joining Aston Villa last season. The 38-year-old has still joined Lazio in the summer.
Paul Konchesky – Hodgson brought in the former Fulham defender for £ 3.8 million in 2010, but was loaned in the next transfer window before signing for Leicester in the summer of 2011. Konchesky owns a pastry and mash cafe called Konch’s Kafe and is run by his mother who is a chef. He is also a fitness fanatic and regularly posts his runs and times on social media.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos – The 2010 season was the Greek’s last in Liverpool for Kyrgiakos. He retired in 2014 after brief stints at Sunderland and Sydney Olympic before ending it. The loose-haired Greek center-back seems to enjoy traveling and fills his Instagram account with picturesque landscapes.
Jamie Carragher – A club player ended his career seven years ago after 737 appearances for Liverpool over 16 years. He is now widely regarded as one of the top television experts in the country and has become one of Gary Neville’s top analysts and training partners at Sky Sports.
Martin Skrtel: The Slovak diehard joined Fenerbahce four years ago before joining Atalanta. Surprisingly, he only lasted three weeks with the Italian team before leaving to join Istanbul Basaksehir, where the 35-year-old still plays.
Raúl Meireles – With his quirky tattoos and hairstyles, it is perhaps not a surprise to see that the outgoing Portuguese remained himself. Last year he participated in a lip sync show in his homeland, showing off his stuff on stage wrapped in what appeared to be bandages. He would have been fondly remembered at Anfield after picking up the Player of the Year from PFA fans in 2010, but later submitted a transfer request to join Chelsea. He retired in 2016 after four years at the club.
Steven Gerrard – The iconic Liverpool midfielder’s managerial career is still in its infancy at Rangers, where he is trying to regain Celtic dominance. There is no doubt that his long-term ambition is to coach Liverpool. He moved to the LA Galaxy from the Reds and then retired in 2016, working with the Liverpool Under-18s before taking over from the Rangers two years ago.
Joe Cole – Cole made 32 appearances in the same season as the Merseyside derby loss. He was then loaned out to Lille and subsequently joined West Ham on a free transfer. Spells at Aston Villa, Coventry City and the Tampa Bay Rowdies followed and, since his retirement in 2016, the former England international has tried his luck as an expert.
Maxi Rodríguez – Still almost strong, the 39-year-old Argentine is back in his homeland with Newell’s Old Boys. He spent five seasons there after leaving Liverpool in 2012, one at Peñarol, before returning to Newell’s to watch his career.
Lucas – After a decade of service and 346 appearances with Liverpool, the defensive midfielder joined Lazio, where he has thrived as a key part of the team. He helped the club achieve glory in the Italian Cup last year.
Fernando Torres – Perhaps the passing years will allow Liverpool fans more warmth towards their former number 9. His departure turned many against him after the controversial £ 50 million transfer to Chelsea in 2011. He never stood out for the Blues, scoring 45 goals in 172 games before moving on to AC Milan. The Atlético de Madrid from his childhood signed him until 2018, when he moved to Japan with Sagan Tosu. He now runs a gym business and retired two years ago. ‘Nine Fitness’ in Madrid has three facilities and Torres has several other businesses in its portfolio.
Honorable mentions:
Glen Johnson – Was not on the Merseyside derby squad, but played 28 of 38 Premier League games that season. The former defender retired last January after leaving Stoke after three seasons with the Potters. Now he runs an investment company called ‘Bed of Honey’ and seems to be a smart businessman if his social media is any use.
