Harry Maguire could benefit greatly from being rested to rediscover his form, said former Man United defender and legend Rio Ferdinand.
The United captain has been on a rough patch in recent months, only getting worse on Wednesday night when he was sent off during a UEFA Nations League clash between England and Denmark.
The expulsion was the latest in a series of poor performances for both the club and the country, which has consistently brought him to the spotlight.
Speaking to the BBC, Ferdinand said the 27-year-old will benefit greatly from time outside the “firing line” to allow him to regain his form.
“In these situations, in which I have also been, sometimes it is necessary to take you out of the oven,” Ferdinand said of Maguire via the BBC.
“Ole has a great job on his hands and I think he has a very important role to play in this. Whether it’s time to give him a little rest, let him compose himself and regain that confidence.”
“They took me out in one game, I think it was Middlesbrough, the coach spoke to me and said ‘Get back to basics, train well and you’ll be back.’ That’s what happened and I was fine. It’s just that sometimes it takes a little off pressure that can really help you.
“When you go game by game every three or four days, it is very difficult to see through the fog. But when you are taken out of the line of fire, you have time to sit down and analyze yourself, your performance, preparation, recovery: all aspects of a football game or 90 minutes “
United will face Newcastle on Saturday in the Premier League, hoping to bounce back from their 6-1 hammering by Tottenham last time out.
They have started the season on the wrong foot, as they have lost two of their first three games.
