The former Red Devil thinks the defender could benefit from a time out of the limelight
Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should rest Harry Maguire after a difficult few weeks.
The England defender was sent off in a midweek Nations League defeat to Denmark and has struggled to find his form at club level this season with the Red Devils losing 6-1 to Tottenham before the international break.
Off the pitch, Maguire was involved in an incident in Greece during the summer in which he received a 21-month suspended prison sentence that he has appealed.
With so much going on for the center-back, Ferdinand believes a break could be the best thing for Maguire right now before United’s next game against Newcastle.
“In these situations, in which I have also been, sometimes it is necessary to take you out of the oven,” Ferdinand said about Maguire through the BBC.
“Ole has a great job on his hands and I think he has a very important role to play in this. Whether it’s time to give him a little rest, let him compose himself and regain that confidence.”
“They took me out in one game, I think it was Middlesbrough, the coach spoke to me and said ‘Get back to basics, train well and you’ll be back.’ That’s what happened and I was fine. It’s just that sometimes it takes a little off pressure that can really help you.
“When you go game by game every three or four days, it is very difficult to see through the fog. But when you are taken out of the line of fire, you have time to sit and analyze yourself, your performance, preparation, recovery, all aspects of a football game or 90 minutes.
“So it’s about rebuilding yourself and playing it simple. Trying to effectively get through a game without being seen.
“It might sound silly, but that’s the way I used to look at it when I lacked a bit of confidence. Because right now they see you for the wrong reasons.”
Jamie Redknapp jumped to Maguire’s defense during the week and emphasized that he deserves some slack considering everything that is going on in his life.
