Deputy Defense Minister, Major (rtd) Derek Oduro says criticism of the offer of 200 police officers as personal protection for members of Parliament (MP) is without merit.

For him, the media deliberately incited the public against MPs, setting the agenda that it was unnecessary to provide personal police protection to MPs.

He said the media was setting the agenda “as if [MPs] we are from afghanistan, as if we were from the congo river basin, who have been brought to come and put here [Ghana] to serve the nation. “

“Meanwhile, you voted for us [and] you are supposed to love us, bring us closer to you, but you hate parliamentarians and it is partly because some of you the media incite the general public against us, we must be frank. So the interior minister is saying yes, they have enough policemen to provide security for parliamentarians and provide security for the entire nation, how many parliamentarians do they want to be killed before we ask for personal security for parliamentarians? (rtd) Oduro, who is also an MP for Nkoranza North, said in a media interview Wednesday at the House of Parliament.

“I don’t think you’re happy that our brother [Ekow] Kwansah [Hayford] has been killed, or you are shedding crocodile tears, “he added.

When some security experts informed him about the concern that we do not have enough police personnel for this measure of personal protection of the parliamentarians and that the concentration should be on providing security for all Ghanaians, Major Oduro replied: “I don’t want to listen to security experts, I am also a security expert. “

Following the murder of the Mfantseman deputy in an assault last Friday, the deputies renewed the call for personal police protection to be provided.

Last Tuesday, the Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, announced in Parliament that his team has assigned 200 policemen to provide personal protection to the deputies.

He said another 800 men would be available for other duties in Parliament and also in the houses of parliamentarians.

Following that announcement, there has been some public criticism and some argue that the work of the operational police in terms of visibility and patrol duties will suffer greatly.

But reacting, the Nkoranza Norte deputy said, “what a job they have [security experts] done?”

“I’m saying that they [police] they are visible all over the place. The Home Secretary says you have no problem, you, the security expert, are sitting somewhere and you say we have a problem. I am saying that 200 does not cause any harm to law enforcement authorities. They are there and they say they don’t have a problem, you’re sitting somewhere and you say I’m a security expert and they have a problem. “

Major (rtd) Oduro said that the duty of the deputies was to enact laws and make sure the government sat down and made sure everyone was given adequate protection and when something happens. “U.S [MPs] take them to Parliament to come and respond, that is our responsibility. “

When asked if it was necessary to enact laws to make that arrangement permanent for other people in other areas, such as university professors whose lives could be threatened and would also need personal protection from the police, Major (rtd) Oduro said: “Bring it, bring it up ”. the idea you [media] They are mouth of okro, mouth of okro, mouth of okro in the sense that everything that enters your mouth you will throw away, so let it come out of your mouth that yes, Parliament, make laws, that university professors must have security ”.
