Gareth Southgate has explained why he chose not to turn to Jack Grealish when England tried to come back against Denmark, much to the bewilderment of Jamie Redknapp.
The Three Lions started the UEFA Nations League tie strong, but the hosts lost control of the tie following Harry Maguire’s red card, followed shortly after by a penalty awarded to Kyle Walker.
Christian Eriksen stepped forward for the shot and made no mistake dispatching past Jordan Pickford, giving Southgate’s side a mountain to climb at Wembley on Wednesday.
The England manager turned to Grealish’s Aston Villa teammate Tyrone Mings as he changed his form to a back quarter after Maguire was sent off.
And when England looked for a draw in the second half, Southgate called up Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho, instead of Villa’s captain in form.
Southgate explained the decisions to substitute the Everton and Dortmund stars ahead of Grealish as a need to maintain speed in wide areas, while Calvert-Lewin would offer a greater presence on free throws.
“We had to go with speed in the wide areas and athleticism in the wide areas because with ten you have a great change without the ball. Mason [Mount] and Marcus [Rashford] he did really well, ” he told Sky Sports.
“ And we felt like we had to put Dominic and Jadon in because the moments to press need speed. It’s a different game with ten, so he threw a lot of plans out the window.
“The team dug and defended as a solid unit and put our plays in the area.”
However, Redknapp has questioned the England coach’s tactical reasoning behind overlooking Grealish.
“I don’t agree with what you said there about Jack Grealish,” he said. “If you want to win set pieces, you have the most fouls played in world football on the field.”
Grealish risks being another talented player not to get the international recognition his talent apparently deserves, and Redknapp said the solution for Villa’s star is simple.
‘It’s hard. Jack Grealish doesn’t have to like him as a footballer. I think of Matt Le Tissier, Glenn Hoddle didn’t like him.
Answering questions about Jack Grealish is probably driving you crazy, but he’s different. Just throw it away, make it do something.
‘It’s simple for him. Go play great for Aston Villa. It is a simple equation for him. He loves his soccer right now. If you don’t like it, that’s not the end of the world, it happens all the time.
