Lautaro Martínez’s agent has refused to speculate on a transfer to the Camp Nou. The Inter forward was constantly linked with a transfer to Barcelona this summer, but nothing materialized.
The Argentine international had been one of Barcelona’s main targets to strengthen their attacking options, but, after talks with Inter stalled, he also failed in a move for Lyon’s Memphis Depay.
“It is not polite to talk about Barcelona because he is an Inter player,” Lautaro’s agent told RadioTrendTopic.
“At Inter he is nice. To speak of transfers would be disrespectful to the club that opened the doors to play in Europe.”
At the moment, Lautaro is in international service with Argentina as they begin their CONMEBOL qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 22-year-old participated in a 1-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday night, while Lionel Scaloni’s team faces Bolivia on Tuesday night.
Barcelona’s transfer saga
Barcelona began negotiating to sign Lautaro from Inter earlier this year, but was frustrated by the Italian club’s insistence on its € 111m buyout clause.
When that buy-out clause expired in July, Barcelona prepared to negotiate a lower transfer fee, perhaps including their own players, but they couldn’t reach an agreement.
Talks with Inter came to a halt in the final week of the transfer window when the Catalan club made an offer too low for Serie A to consider.
Instead, Barcelona turned their attention to Depay, who was a cheaper alternative because he had one year left on his contract at Lyon.
Due to the contract situation, Lyon was willing to sell the striker this summer but did not reach an agreement with Barcelona in time.
Depay himself revealed that he had agreed to personal terms in a transfer to the Camp Nou, but a couple of details prevented the transfer from taking place.
Ronald Koeman, who had trained Depay internationally, had recommended him to the Barça leadership.
