The position that Antoine Griezmann plays is not only a matter of debate at Barcelona, but it has also become a problem with the French team.
Ronald Koeman is lining up the 29-year-old as a right winger, but former French midfielder Alain Giresse believes France manager Didier Deschamps is trying to play Griezmann as the number 10 to give him a much-needed confidence boost.
“The problem is [that] Griezmann has lost confidence and Didier is playing with him to try to regain it, “Giresse told L’Equipe after France’s 0-0 draw against Portugal.
“He played like a number 10, but Griezmann is not a number 10. We have always said that if there is a player in whom the play should turn, it should be [Olivier] Giroud. In the World Cup it was like that with [Kylian] Mbappé on the one hand and [Blaise] Matuidi for the other.
“Well, we are talking about a 4-4-2 and a diamond system in the middle and we know very well that we need things to complement each other when we try to play this way.
“However, for two games, Didier Deschamps puts Griezmann behind the two ahead of Giroud and Mbappé. But against Portugal, Griezmann behaved more like a kind of off-center false attacker, he was no longer supporting Giroud.
“Because Mbappé, he is not the type of player who will move around the forward. He needs space.”
Before France’s game against Croatia, would Giresse make changes to bring out the best in Griezmann?
“Maybe, but no more than one or two; three at the most,” Giresse explained. “Later, I would try to get closer to the game system of the last World Cup in Russia, when our midfield got along well with our attackers.
“So, I put Giroud in front, Mbappé to the side, to the right or to the left it doesn’t matter and I swing with a player from the right like [Kingsley] Eat.
“Finally, I put Griezmann in support of Giroud, but not as a 10 because he expressed himself better in a position of nine and a half. It had worked perfectly, but again, Griezmann may need to regain more confidence.”
Griezmann remains an undisputed starter for both Barcelona and France, despite their recent struggles on the pitch.
