American rapper Kanye west He has joined the great list of celebrities around the world who criticize the Special Anti-Theft Squad (SARS) of Nigeria.
The unit in recent weeks has been accused of killing young people, extortion, accepting bribes, illegal arrests, wrongly profiling people, among others.
Although SARS, formed in 1992 to fight crime, exists to protect people, Nigerians believe that the police are now the criminals who create chaos in society.
People in the country in recent days have embarked on a nationwide protest voicing their concerns while calling on government officials to disband SARS.
The protests against the squad were sparked by a video of a man allegedly killed by police.
In a Twitter post on Monday, October 12, 2020, Kanye West endorsed citizens’ concerns.
He stated that it was critical to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari hears the cries of his people.
“I support my Nigerian brothers and sisters to end police brutality, the government must respond to the cries of the people #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria. “

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari had previously said that he was determined to end police brutality by introducing new reforms, but protesters are still demanding that the unit be disbanded.
According to them, previous commitments to change police behavior had had no effect, so they want SARS to be eliminated entirely.
