Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) says a minimal spill from the Weija Dam has started.
In a statement issued by the water supplier, the spill from the dam is due to the heavy downpour in the catchment area of the Densu river basin that occurred over the weekend.
“The safe operating level of the Weija dam is 47 feet, however heavy rains shot the dam level from 46.8 feet to 48.4 feet in less than 24 hours, prompting the spill immediately to prevent a possible collapse, “the statement read.
GWCL management hereby advises all residents, organizations and institutions that have property downstream of the dam to take notice and act accordingly.
Cities can include; Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.
“Management has informed the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), National Security, the National Investigation Bureau (BNI), chiefs, the district assembly, opinion leaders, and all stakeholders. below the dam to evacuate the area immediately to avoid any eventuality.
“Meanwhile, GWCL, NADMO and other industry agencies are making arrangements for the provision of water and other services to people displaced by the flood.”
GWCL also warned residents of the area to be on alert as information from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) indicates that there will be more rains.
