Seniors in Kenya are returning to school after the government reversed its earlier decision to scrap the academic year due to the coronavirus.

In elementary schools, only fourth and eighth grade students will resume face-to-face learning starting Monday.

Form four students in high schools also return to schools to prepare for national exams scheduled for March.

Typically, seniors would have sat for exams at the end of this year.

The general secretary of the Kenyan national teachers union, Wilson Sossion, told BBC Newsday that the reopening was being done with caution.

“All schools must implement Covid-19 protocols in preparation for the admission of students as one that must disinfect and provide enough points for hand washing, all students must wear face masks, social distancing is encouraged, although we have seen that in some cases it is impossible. ” he said.

Sossion said there is no guarantee that infections will not increase after schools reopen and said new cases will be treated if they occur, but that schools will not all close again.

Teachers in Kenya returned to school two weeks ago to prepare for the resumption of face-to-face learning.

Kenya has confirmed 41,546 cases of coronavirus so far.
