A driver who was fleeing after allegedly stealing cattle ended up shooting down and instantly killing a 23-year-old man in Kyekyewere near Teacher Mante in the Eastern Region.

According to a report in the Daily Graphic newspaper, the unknown driver aboard a red Toyota Camry with the registration GR 1948-V had been fleeing from the owners of the cattle he had stolen.

The driver allegedly ran into the deceased, Fuseini Abdul Aziz, and killed him instantly because he was driving at full speed.

“He managed to bolt from the scene of the accident and dumped his vehicle in a ditch on the Accra-Suhum highway,” according to a report of the incident on the online portal of the Daily Graphic newspaper.

Eastern Regional Police Command Public Relations (PRO) noncommissioned officer Sergeant Francis Gomado said the deceased met his untimely death while directing traffic at the scene of the accident.

He explained that the victim, who was a driver aboard a truck with main registration 11-GJ-1031 and trailer registration 11-JM-3254-BF loaded with rosewood, was traveling from Bole to Tema.

However, the truck broke down in Kyekyewere after developing a mechanical failure following an attempt to climb a gentle slope.

Sgt. Gomado said that the deceased therefore decided to direct traffic after placing a warning triangle on both ends of the truck to signal other road users to avoid any accidents.

The victim died on the spot after being hit by the speeding vehicle whose driver was trying to flee while being pursued by a group of people from Asuboi, a nearby town, after allegedly stealing some livestock.

He said that the body of the deceased had been deposited in the Suhum Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation.

Sergeant Gomado said a police search of Teacher Mante in the abandoned car revealed that there were 12 goats and a sheep in the back seat and in the trunk of the car, which he allegedly stole from Asuboi.

With the cattle left for display, the vehicle was towed to Teacher Mante Police Station and impounded to assist with the investigation, while police have intensified investigations to arrest the culprit.

He urged the public to assist the police with vital information to help the police arrest the culprit.

“We urge anyone who knows the owner of the vehicle, his whereabouts or has any vital information that can help the police in the investigation of the incident to do so urgently as a patriotic citizen,” he said.
