Edinson Cavani is eager to restore a winning mentality at Manchester United after promising that his first mission is to help his new team to the Premier League title this season.
Cavani came to Old Trafford as a free agent on the deadline day after leaving Paris Saint-Germain and stated that as one of the world’s greatest teams, United should always fight to win championships.
Despite having won a record 20 top flight crowns, United have stumbled in recent seasons and it has been seven years since their last success with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Their best result since then was as a distant runner-up with José Mourinho in 2018 and they have started this season poorly with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side who have lost two of their first three games, including a 6-1 home win against Tottenham Hotspur. .
Cavani, who won six league titles in France, told United’s website: “I think any player who is competitive by nature always wants to be able to win the silver medal.
‘You always work hard to be able to do your best and based on your performance, you can get the right results.
So when you’ve gotten the right results, you can win trophies and accomplish great things.
“I just joined one of the biggest clubs in the world and I think one of the first goals it has, as a club, is to win and be champions.
“I think you can’t help but think that a club like Manchester United can aspire to win the title.
“Starting with the Premier League and then moving on to other trophies.
“That is what I would like to achieve with this club, win trophies, win titles and then be able to give the same impression here that I have always tried to make in all the clubs I have played for.”
Having come to the UK from Paris, the 33-year-old is training alone in quarantine as he prepares to make his debut.
The two-week period means he will miss Saturday’s clash against Newcastle United, but could make his debut against his old club PSG on October 20 in the Champions League.
“I was thinking it was just fate and how things can turn out,” Cavani added.
It’s just unbelievable, things always happen for a reason and sometimes in the most unbelievable way.
‘So now it’s my turn to experience one of those moments that you never imagined happening, and when you look back, they really do.
But it will be a great feeling and a pleasant experience and it is something that makes me very happy.
“I’m probably losing that contact with my teammates, and I’m catching up on training ground and the intensity of a game itself.
“But, from the moment I start training with my teammates, I can catch up in the shortest time possible and be competing immediately and doing my best for the group.”
