Ekow Quansah Hayford, the Mfantseman MP who was shot and killed.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the central region’s Mfantseman constituency is implementing processes to replace the party’s slain candidate, Ekow Quansah Hayford, ahead of the December 7 general election.
This is in accordance with the provisions of the Ghana Election Commission that establishes in Section 4 of the 2020 Public Election Regulations, CI 127, that: “When at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, it will allow an additional period of 10 days for nominations. “
Confirming the development, the first vice president of the NPP in the Mfantseman constituency, Yaw Berchie-Nuako, said the constituency executive would meet during the week to decide on a candidate.
According to him, the person will be presented to the national executive for approval before their data is presented to the Electoral Commission (EC).
“The constituency executive here is on the ground and therefore we know who can win the seat for us,” he added.
The 10-day grace period to submit a nominee is due to the fact that Mr. Hayford, who died during an armed robbery attack, submitted his nomination form prior to the incident.
The holder had concluded all the processes on Thursday, October 8, 2020, before being assassinated on Friday, October 9, 2020, which coincidentally was the last day for the presentation of all the forms.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh, awarded a reward of ¢ 20,000 to the murderers of the MP.
In a statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Directorate and signed by Police Superintendent Sheila Kesse Abayie-Buckman, the Service said the money will only be released for credible information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Mr. Hayford was shot and killed after his car was attacked on the Nkusukum Mankessim-Abeadze Duadze highway in the Central Region.
Eyewitnesses say the alleged armed robbers numbering around six began shooting at the MP’s vehicle when its driver tried to drive through the robbery operation.
The driver was subsequently shot, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
It is then alleged that the MP introduced himself to the robbers, which infuriated them. They then shot him twice.
