Government plans are well advanced for the construction of an Olympic Stadium in Accra for the 13th African Games in 2023, announced the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah.

Speaking at the 45th MTN Awards Ceremony of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), the minister said that a site for the stadium had been purchased but that he kept the location close to his chest until all work was completed. preparatory.

He also indicated that two Olympic-size swimming pools would be built in Accra and Kumasi, as well as international tennis courts and other ancillary sports facilities in Cape Coast for use during the continent’s largest multi-sport event to be hosted by Ghana.

“The celebration of the African Games in 2023, which will involve 54 participating countries and 25 sports disciplines, will be the most glamorous and prestigious sporting event in Ghana’s history. Currently, the procurement processes for the construction of an Olympic Stadium are almost complete, ”said Asiamah.

He assured that the ministry will also seek closer collaboration with SWAG to prepare athletes and properly motivate them to excel at the African Games and ensure that “Ghana is marketed as the preferred sports destination in Africa.”

While praising SWAG for building cordial relationships between his ministry and the Ghana Sports Development Association over the years, he said it was important that the association institute an annual award honoring the best sports journalist sponsored by the ministry. as a way to encourage sports journalists to work hard with a sense of professionalism.

Asiamah noted that as the 2023 African Games approached, sports journalists would be excited not only about the selection and preparation of athletes for the Ghana team, but would also be equally interested in choosing the managers of the different teams.

He commissioned sports journalists such as crusaders for national unity through sport to educate all Ghanaians to view the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections as a game between political parties that, like sports, are governed by rules and principles. of fair play and that only the best. team would be victorious.
