The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has expressed concern over claims that some ammunition seized at its Tema post will be delivered to some “great men.”
“The Ghana Revenue Authority considers any information to imply that seized ammunition is being kept for later delivery to some ‘big men’ as worrying, malicious and premature. The result of the police investigations into the restricted items will be made public when it is concluded, ”the statement read.
It stated categorically in the statement that a container described as containing personal effects, household items and a carding machine was marked “Red Channel.”
“After the examination, eighteen (18) packages identified as restricted items were found in the container. These include 436 pistols (side arms), 26 packs of 50 pieces of ammo, and 1 piece (40 ml) of pepper spray.
These items had been imported into the country without the necessary permits from the Ministry of the Interior. The items were also not declared to Customs upon arrival.
“An inventory of the items was carried out in the presence of officers from the Preventive Wing of the Customs Division (Intelligence and Inspection Officer), Office of National Investigations, National Security and Police. All representatives, including the clearing agent, signed against the total number of arms and ammunition seized, ”the statement said.
The GRA indicated that a seizure notice was issued to the clearing agent and that the seized shipment was placed in the custody of the Customs Division.
“The clearing agent is currently assisting the Tema Port Police Command with the investigation. Meanwhile, the Customs Division has provided the Police with the necessary information ”.
GRA warned importers that the importation of arms and ammunition can only be carried out with a permit from the Ministry of the Interior and that these items must be declared upon import.
Therefore, the Authority assured the general public that the Customs Division will not waver in its regulatory duties at the nation’s ports and other points of entry to ensure the safety of all citizens.
Background
Sammy Gyamfi, National Communication Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), alleged on Sunday that the Customs Preventive and Excise Service is conspiring with some ‘big men’ who have imported 436 guns and ammunition from Turkey to Ghana and are pulling the strings behind the scenes to free shipping.
“… Ghanaians deserve to know who illegally imported such pistols and ammunition into the country and for what purpose … Ghanaians deserve to know the identity of the so-called ‘big men’ who are pulling the strings behind the scenes to get the shipment released,” They read parts of your statement.
